Residing in the UK, Laura Gibson is a contemporary dancer and travel and lifestyle blogger at Promise to Carry the Cases. When Laura reached out to us recently, we fell in love with her mission to capture her travel adventures and daily life as a way of collecting memories to look back on into the future. We chatted to Laura about her past travel adventures, what style means to her and what inspired her to start her blog; Promise to Carry the Cases.
What inspired you to get into blogging about fashion and travel?
We have always loved to travel and I have always kept a little travel journal. We always take hundreds of photos (too many) and try to capture moments or places…So I suppose the blog became a creative outlet for all our photos and stories and adventures. We may not always be able to travel this way so it is also a nice way to collect memories for our old age haha! The fashion and beauty strands were really just an extension from this. Little thoughts and tales on everyday things.
How would you best describe your every day style?
Well every day is sort of hard one as working in contemporary dance doesn’t lend itself to much style, I’m actually the complete opposite, joggers, t-shirts, socks pulled up, hair everywhere, so it’s mainly loose, layered and comfortable….such a great look!….But the other me, when I can wear ‘normal’ clothes is a little bit boho relaxed and feminine, I never quite pull off that polished look, but I’m okay with that!
Do you have any style bloggers or places that you like to go for fashion and style inspiration?
Well the women of Paris are so understated and chic, and I long to be that way.
For me, inspiration can come from movies, anything based in the 1940’s, for the tea dresses and prints, the late 70’s the 90’s A complete mix I know but I suppose if something catches your eye….?
In regard to bloggers I think Lucy Williams from Fashion Me Now, has great style and puts pieces together so well, she also has the perfect holiday wardrobe.
…..And of course there is the forever amazing SJP and Jennifer Aniston….never far from my mind.
What has been your favourite place in the world that you have visited and why?
This is a hard one, I have been so lucky to have seen so many wonderful places….Tulum in Mexico is amazing, I don’t think I’ve ever touched upon softer sand and the turquoise water-wow! …and Isla Holbox is truly magical, sunsets there are surely the best in the world. I also loved the colour and the people of Sri Lanka. Italy is just beautiful……But if I had to choose, the Greek Islands have my heart, for the people, the food, the clean, beautiful, could be the Caribbean beaches, but more rustic and real, and you can slow down there like nowhere else….There is a tiny island in the Mini Cyclaeds called Koufonisia, which is etched in my mind forever.
You recently travelled to beautiful Bali, what were the hidden gems that you discovered while you were there?
Bali is also one of my favourite places, can I have that one too ? We have just returned from our second trip there and this time we ventured right up to Pemuteran in the North West. It was so peaceful, colourful and full of spirt. The beach was spellbinding, very special. We stayed at Puri Ganesha, which was really a once in a life time stay, incredible! I also have to say The Temple Lodge in Bingin was also a hidden gem, I’ll always remember those apple and cinnamon pancakes…
What are your go-to brands or fashion outfits when you’re travelling?
Well I have a slight obsession with bikinis, I always buy a few new ones for each trip. I really love Peony Swimwear for their beautiful prints and designs, Oysho and Topshop do great bikinis too, that really fit well. Along with my bikini obsession is the white cotton top addiction, so these are definite staple, lots of loose but pretty tops/blouses to throw over bikinis and with cut of Levis, flat sandals and slides. I also like to take tunic and wrap dresses, polka dots and floral prints, to throw on at the beach or for that first perfect post shower, breezy sunset drink of an evening. Of course a straw hat and this year I’m very into straw baskets for the beach and am looking forward to using my circular woven bag which I picked up in Bali. Mostly I am a Zara girl through and through, they just never get it wrong…Of course this is for the sunny climates, city breaks and winter breaks are a whole other thought process.
Do you have any travel or beauty essentials that you can’t live without?
Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream……Always! Lots of SPF!
